Things to Do in Merzouga Besides Camel Riding

From Gnawa music in Khamlia to stargazing in the dunes — how to fill two or three days in Merzouga.

Key takeaways

  • Merzouga offers much more than camel rides: quads, buggies, sandboarding, music, markets and stargazing.
  • Two nights lets you combine a desert camp with a full day of activities.
  • Plan active things for the morning and late afternoon, especially in summer.

Most travellers come to Merzouga for one image: a line of camels crossing the orange dunes of Erg Chebbi at sunset. It is a beautiful experience — but it is only the beginning. The villages around the dunes, the wider desert and the night sky offer enough to fill two or three days. Here are the best things to do in Merzouga, from adrenaline to culture to pure relaxation.

1. Ride a quad through the dunes

A quad bike is the fastest way to feel the scale of Erg Chebbi. With a local guide, you ride over dune crests and through sandy valleys to viewpoints where the dunes stretch in every direction. Rides range from a one-hour taster to a full day. Start with our Merzouga quad tours or the complete quad biking guide.

2. Drive a dune buggy

Prefer a steering wheel? A buggy lets you drive side by side with a partner or child, with seat belts and a roll cage. It is a favourite for couples and families. See Merzouga buggy tours.

3. Take a camel trek at sunset

The classic. Camels carry you slowly through the dunes as the light turns gold, usually towards a desert camp. Short treks of one to two hours are enough for most people. Combine it with a quad ride in our Quad + Camel + Night package.

4. Spend a night in a desert camp

Sleeping among the dunes is unforgettable: dinner under the stars, the deep silence of the night and sunrise from the top of a dune. Camps range from simple to very comfortable; ask exactly what is included before you book.

5. Try sandboarding

Sliding down a dune on a board is great fun and surprisingly tiring — the walk back up is the workout. The steep faces of Erg Chebbi’s bigger dunes are ideal. Many camps and guides can provide boards.

6. Climb a dune for sunrise

Even without a vehicle, getting up early to climb a dune and watch the sun rise over the desert is one of the best free things to do in Merzouga. Bring a warm layer in winter. If you would rather ride there, try the sunrise quad.

7. Listen to Gnawa music in Khamlia

Khamlia is a small village south of Merzouga, known for its community of Gnawa musicians. Gnawa music, with its iron castanets (qraqeb), drums and hypnotic rhythms, has deep roots in sub-Saharan Africa. Visiting a music house in Khamlia is a warm, memorable experience; a small contribution is customary.

8. Look for birds at the seasonal lake

To the west of the dunes lies Dayet Srji, a shallow seasonal lake. In wet years it holds water and attracts birds, sometimes including flamingos. In dry years it may be empty, so ask locally before you go.

9. Visit the market town of Rissani

About 35 kilometres north, Rissani is the historic heart of the Tafilalt oasis and has a lively traditional market several days a week. Nearby are the ruins of Sijilmassa, once a great caravan city on the trans-Saharan trade routes. It makes a good half-day trip — check market days locally.

10. Discover fossils around Erfoud

The Erfoud area is famous for fossils — trilobites, ammonites and orthoceras found in the local rock. Workshops cut and polish them into everything from small souvenirs to tabletops. It is an interesting stop on the way to or from Merzouga.

11. Stargaze

Far from city lights and with very dry air, the sky above Erg Chebbi is spectacular on clear nights. Step a little away from your camp or hotel lights, let your eyes adjust and you will see the Milky Way. Moonless nights are best.

12. Simply slow down

Some of the best moments in Merzouga are the quiet ones: mint tea on a terrace facing the dunes, a walk along the edge of the sand in the late afternoon, an evening by the fire. Leave space in your plans for doing nothing at all.
