Why choose a buggy in Merzouga?

A Merzouga buggy tour gives you the thrill of the dunes with the comfort and familiarity of a car. You sit side by side with your partner, friend or child, wear a seat belt and steer with a wheel instead of handlebars. The roll cage and the seats make it feel secure, while the suspension and big tyres let the buggy climb and glide over the sand.

That makes buggies a favourite with couples who want to share the experience rather than ride separate quads, with parents who want a child next to them, and with travellers who simply feel more at ease behind a wheel. You still get the climbs, the views and the laughter — just with a different feel.

How a Merzouga buggy tour works

Every Merzouga buggy tour starts at our base in Merzouga village or with a pickup from your hotel. Your guide explains the controls — accelerator, brake, steering, seat belts — and the rules of the ride, then you follow your guide into the dunes. On the first slopes you learn to keep momentum on the way up and to come down slowly and straight. It quickly feels natural.

From there, the route depends on the tour you chose: the edge of the dunes for a 1-hour ride, the tall central dunes for a 2-hour ride, or the open desert around Erg Chebbi on longer tours. Sunset and sunrise rides are timed to the sun, so you reach a viewpoint at the perfect moment.

Buggy prices: per buggy, not per person

Merzouga buggy tours are priced per vehicle. If two people share one buggy, they share one price. A buggy costs more than a quad, but you get side-by-side seats, seat belts and a roll cage. Compare all options on our prices page.

Tips for driving a buggy in the dunes

  • Keep your seat belt fastened and your hands on the wheel, and keep arms inside the roll cage.
  • Use smooth, steady pressure on the accelerator — sand rewards gentle inputs.
  • Climb straight up and come down straight and slowly, letting the engine help.
  • Stay in your guide’s tracks: the guide knows where the steep faces are.
  • Swap drivers only at a stop, and tell your guide first.

Who are Merzouga buggy tours for?

Couples who want to share the ride, parents with a child passenger, friends who prefer a steering wheel, and travellers who are curious about the dunes but not keen on a quad. Because a buggy feels stable and enclosed, it also suits people who are a little nervous at first. If you love the feeling, the half-day and full-day buggy tours let you explore much further.

Quad or buggy?

If you want the most physical, motorbike-like ride, choose a quad. If you want to sit together, steer with a wheel and wear a seat belt, choose a buggy. Our quad vs buggy page compares them side by side.

Our buggies are 2-seaters. Vehicle details are on our vehicles page.

Merzouga buggy FAQ

What is a dune buggy?

A dune buggy (also called a side-by-side or SSV) is an off-road vehicle with a steering wheel, pedals, side-by-side seats, seat belts and a protective roll cage.

Is a buggy easier to drive than a quad?

Many people find it easier because it drives like a car. A quad needs more body movement and feels more like a motorbike. See quad vs buggy.

How many people fit in one buggy?

Our buggies are 2-seaters: one driver and one passenger, sharing one price.

Are Merzouga buggy tours priced per person?

No — per buggy. Everyone in the same buggy shares one price. See prices.

Do I need a driving licence to drive a buggy?
