The short answer
Choose a Merzouga quad tour if you want your own vehicle and the most physical, motorbike-like feeling in the dunes. Choose a Merzouga buggy tour if you want to sit side by side with someone, steer with a wheel and wear a seat belt. Both are guided, both are suitable for beginners, and both take you into the same beautiful dunes of Erg Chebbi.
The quad vs buggy question is one of the most common things guests ask us in Merzouga, and there is no wrong answer. It mostly comes down to three things: who you are travelling with, how you like to drive, and how far you want to go.

What riding a quad feels like
On a quad you sit astride the machine and steer with handlebars. In soft sand you use your body: leaning slightly forward on a climb, shifting your weight in a turn, standing a little on rough ground. That makes riding a quad in Merzouga engaging and energetic. Our quads are automatic, so there is no clutch or gear lever — just the throttle and the brakes.
A quad suits travellers who want their own vehicle and enjoy a bit of adrenaline, groups of friends who each want to ride, and anyone who rides motorbikes or scooters at home. See all quad tours.
What driving a buggy feels like
In a buggy you sit in a proper seat, fasten a seat belt and steer with a wheel. The roll cage and wide wheelbase make it feel stable, and the suspension soaks up the bumps. The feeling is closer to a rally car than a motorbike: smooth climbs, big views, and someone beside you to share every moment.
Buggies are ideal for couples, parents with a child passenger and people who drive cars but have never ridden a motorbike. See all buggy tours.
Price: per quad or per buggy
Both are priced per vehicle. Two people on two quads pay for two quads; two people in one buggy pay for one buggy. For a couple, the most economical option is to share one quad; a buggy costs more but gives you side-by-side seats, seat belts and a roll cage. Overnight packages are different: they are per person because they include a night in a camp. Full details are on our prices page.
Quad or buggy: what we suggest for…
- A couple on their first trip to the Sahara: one buggy for a shared ride, or the sunset buggy for a special moment.
- Friends looking for adrenaline: one quad each on the 2-hour quad tour or longer.
- A family with young children: a buggy with the children as passengers, on a short or sunset ride.
- A solo traveller: a quad — your own vehicle, your own pace behind the guide.
- Experienced riders: a quad on the half-day or full-day tour, or a buggy if you want to cover long distances in comfort.
Still not sure?
Many groups mix both: one couple in a buggy, friends on quads, everyone riding together behind the same guide. Tell us who is coming and we will suggest the best combination.
