Merzouga feels remote — and that is part of its magic. It sits at the end of the paved road in south-east Morocco, at the foot of the Erg Chebbi dunes and close to the Algerian border. Getting there takes some planning, but it is straightforward. This guide covers how to get to Merzouga by car, bus, plane and organised tour, with approximate times and practical tips for your arrival.
Where is Merzouga?
Merzouga is a village in the Drâa-Tafilalet region, south of the towns of Erfoud and Rissani. The neighbouring village of Hassilabied lies a few kilometres to the north, also at the edge of the dunes. Both have many hotels, riads and auberges facing the sand, and most desert camps are reached from one or the other.
From Marrakech
The classic route crosses the High Atlas over the Tizi n’Tichka pass to Ouarzazate, then follows the “Road of a Thousand Kasbahs” east through the Dades valley and Tinghir (near the Todra Gorge), before turning south via Tinejdad or Erfoud to Rissani and Merzouga. The distance is roughly 550–570 km and the drive takes around 9–10 hours without stops.
It is possible in one long day, but most people split it, spending a night in the Dades valley or near the Todra Gorge. That makes the journey part of the adventure rather than an ordeal.
From Fes
From Fes, the road climbs through the cedar forests of the Middle Atlas via Ifrane and Azrou, crosses the high plateau to Midelt, then descends through the Ziz valley to Errachidia, Erfoud, Rissani and Merzouga. The distance is roughly 450–480 km — about 7–8 hours of driving. It is a beautiful route with constantly changing scenery.
By plane
The nearest airport is Errachidia (Moulay Ali Cherif), around 130 km north of Merzouga — about two hours by road. Flights are limited, usually via Casablanca, so check schedules carefully. Ouarzazate airport is a further option but much further away. From the airport you will need a pre-arranged transfer, a taxi or a rental car.
By bus
Long-distance bus companies, including CTM and Supratours, run services towards Merzouga from cities such as Marrakech and Fes, often with overnight journeys. Timetables change by season, so check the companies’ websites or stations before you travel and book ahead in busy periods. Many hotels in Merzouga can collect you from the bus stop if you ask in advance.
Driving yourself
Renting a car gives you the most freedom, and the main roads to Merzouga are paved and generally in good condition. A few tips:
- Avoid driving after dark: animals, unlit vehicles and pedestrians are common.
- Fill up whenever you can; distances between towns can be long.
- Respect speed limits — police checks are frequent.
- You do not need a 4x4 to reach Merzouga. Never drive a normal car onto the dunes.
On an organised tour
Many visitors come on multi-day tours from Marrakech or Fes that include transport, accommodation and a desert camp. This is the easiest option if you do not want to drive. If your tour leaves you free time in Merzouga, a quad or buggy ride fits easily into an afternoon — ask your driver to drop you at our base or tell us your hotel.
Planning your arrival day
Most people arrive in Merzouga in the afternoon. That is perfect timing for a sunset quad or a short 1-hour ride before dinner. If you are spending your first night in the dunes, our Quad + Night in the Desert package takes you straight from the village to a desert camp.
Once you arrive, finding us is easy: see our meeting point and pickup page. We pick up guests from hotels and camps in and around Merzouga village.
Arrival checklist
- Cash in dirhams — cash machines are much easier to find in Rissani and Erfoud than in the villages.
- Your hotel or camp name and a map pin saved offline.
- A local SIM card or eSIM, for WhatsApp and maps.
- Fuel, if you are driving: fill up in Erfoud or Rissani.
- Your activity confirmations, including the meeting time and place.
Arriving with these sorted means you can drop your bags and head straight for the dunes.
Leaving Merzouga
If you are heading on to Fes or Marrakech, start early. A sunrise ride followed by breakfast still gets you on the road by mid-morning.
